Louisiana Expands Motorcycle Training Courses for Riders

Louisiana has required bikers to pass a knowledge and skills test to obtain a full M-class license since 2011. Now, the state is stepping up its voluntary training programs for bikers looking to improve their skills.

The Louisiana State Police is offering new training courses across the state at various locations and dates.

“It’s fun and it’s terrifying at the same time,” said Quang Le, a first-time rider, about his experience taking the inaugural course.

In 2022, Louisiana recorded 1,951 motorcycle accidents, with 80 fatalities. Similar numbers were reported in 2014, while 2013 saw slightly higher incidents. In 2012, accidents peaked at 2,140 with 78 fatalities.

According to Trooper Bryan Lee of the Louisiana State Police:

“Some crashes result from riders not driving up to their ability, while others happen because drivers aren’t aware of motorcycles nearby. These courses offer basic skills and safety techniques to reduce injuries and fatalities.”

Requirements for Participation

Participants enrolling in these courses must bring the following:

  • DOT-certified helmet
  • Long sleeves and long pants
  • Full-finger gloves
  • Eye protection (shield or goggles)
  • Sturdy, over-the-ankle boots

Rain gear is also recommended, as the courses will proceed rain or shine. Additionally, applicants must answer, “Can you ride a bicycle?” as this skill is mandatory, even for trike riders.

Courses are open to law enforcement officers as well.
